Hi all. I've been learning some great things here, so thanks in advance for all the advice and info!
Some background - I am in Australia and have been on the lookout for a PAM48 40mm for a special present for my missus. I had been hoping to find a pre-owned one to contain the budget, but they are hard to come by! I have tracked 2 watches down, and I need to make a quick decision as to which to go for! Here're the deals:

1. a brand new PAM48 waiting for me at a very reputable and well established city Authorised dealer. Asking AUD$7600 (USD$6250). Will throw in 2 extra leather straps in addition to the original brown croc with deployment clasp. They will not move at all on the retail price (common on Panerai!)

2. a used ~2005 PAM48, also through a very reputable dealer. Has original inner and outer box and (credit card sized) warranty card. Has case protector. May be missing some of the booklets and the screwdriver tool. Will come with original black croc strap on deployment clasp (a bit worn), along with 2 spare leather straps. Will be professionally polished, cleaned and checked prior to sale. Asking AUD$5950 ($USD5000), insured and posted to my door.

So the difference is $USD1250.

What do the experts out there think? I am not a collector - this is for a lifelong use special present (I hope!). My original budget was going to be about AUS$5000 before I fell in love with these damned watches!!
Is there going to be a reliability/servicing issue with a 10yr old one? Warranty issues? Other ideas?

Let me know!

Mat :(

I would just buy used, unless there was a lot of wear and the edges are all rounded from repolishing.

Cheers mate. Yeah - the used one looks to need a descent polish with some scratching around the polished bezel. Hard to say whether would be noticeable once polished out (that is, whether there'd be flat spots and so on....)

Spend the extra and buy new. You might not care buying used, but you buy new for her.

Clean, fresh and with a 2 year warranty. Plus you get the two extra straps rather than a used one
